Liberal Position
Over the last 35 years, the U.S. has run up over $5.5 Trillion in Trade deficits with China (see article). This deficit has funded more subsidies of manufacturing and stealing of American jobs. Under Bush and Obama/Biden the Trade deficit ballooned (see chart). There are several things that contributed to this problem:
- Higher taxes on corporations forced companies to move to China where it can operate under lower taxes.
- Higher Tariffs on exports from the U.S. make it difficult to ship anything to China, and the U.S. Politicians allowed these Tariffs to be levied on the U.S.
- None of the recent past presidents would stand up to China and push back on their aggressive push towards world domination.
Joe Biden has publicly stated that China is NOT an enemy and is more of a Partner with the United States, even though China is on the record to become the worlds largest super power, replacing the U.S. in that role. While he and Obama were weak on China during Obama's 8 years, Joe Biden sounds a lot like President Trump now when it comes to dealing with China (WSJ Article).
For many years the Presidents have let China grow and take advantage of the U.S. and steal jobs. Will Joe Biden actually maintaint the strong stance that Trump has taken against China?
Conversative Position
Trade imbalance is natural and as long as the surpluses and deficits swing back and forth, it is a good thing. When China levies Tariffs on U.S. exports, it tips the scales in favor of China and suddenly, we were stuck in a long period (35 years) of continued trade deficits. This allowed China to subsidize more manufacturing and steal more of our jobs, making us very dependent on the Chinese for many many products. This was a national security threat.
President Trump was the first president to confront this world domination approach that China was embarking on, and is attempting to level the playing field. By lowering corporate taxes and providing incentives to companies, they a have started moving back to the U.S. and opening up manufacturing plants. This creates jobs, is good for our economy and increases our national security.
When coronavirus hit us and it was discovered that all of our PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) was being manufactured in China, it opened a lot of eyes to the fact that China could cut us off and let us all die. How did things get so bad. Trump is attempting to fix this.
China has stated that they support Joe Biden for President, since they believe that he will be softer on the Chinese and allow them to continue their quest to dominate the world.
