Liberal Position
Under Obama/Biden and Bush, North Korea violated UN requirements and heavy sanctions were levied on North Korea. But these sanctions only hurt the people and not the dictator. North Korea continued to violate terms including experimenting with testing missiles. These missiles were shot over Japan.
Obama/Biden approach was hands off and did not confront the issue. As a result of this policy, North Korea advance along its path to nuclear missile capability with increased threats to our alies and the west coast of the United States.
Conversative Position
Despite critics and advisor recommendations, Trump actually met with the leader of North Korea, several times. Trump did not lighted up on the Sanctions, but North Korea returned the remains of over 300 U.S. Soldiers from the Korean war. 6 previous presidents could not get the remains returned but President Trump did. This was a major accomplishment.
When Trump met with North Korea leaders, they were able to stop the frequent launch of test missiles over the sea of Japan. Getting North Korea to stop these launch tests of missiles was a huge accomplishment and has made the world a safer place.
