Abortion

Issue Summary
In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled against the Texas state law prohibiting banning abortion. In it's conclusion, the Supreme court had to weigh the life of the fetus with the rights guaranteed in the 14th amendment and to that end it concluded that the right to abort a fetus was allowed only in the first trimester (essentially first 12 weeks). It deemed that after such time, the fetus was viable and could sustain life outside of the womb. To read more about this decision. However, the Constitution is very specific that any right not specifically listed in the Bill of Rights (e.g, speech, guns, religion, life, liberty, etc), are left to the states. In 2022, The United States Supreme Court ruled in the Dobbs Case that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion, and each state would need to decide the issue.

This is not an issue about if a woman has a right to abort a baby, but if the U.S. Constitution guarantees that right.

Planned Parenthood operates clinics that provide abortion services. Planned Parenthood received over $80 million of PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) funding in the Coronavirus stimulus. At a time when all elective procedures in hospitals were put on hold, the elective procedures done by Planned Parenthood were allowed to continue. This is due to the millions in lobbying money spent each year by this organization.

Liberal Position

Liberals profess to an absolute right to abortion even up to and including the time of delivery.  Some liberals believe that the women should have the right to abort a child even after it is born as shown here in Governor Ralph Northam's explanation.

Liberals believe that abortion should be paid for by the government and health insurance.

Even the liberal justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg believe that the Roe v. Wade Decision was a faulty decision

Conservative Position

Conservatives believe in the santity of life even in an unborn child.  Once the heart starts beating, conservatives believe it is wrong to abort the life of the unborn child.  However, everyone seems to agree that if the life of the mother is in danger, the choice to be made to save the woman's life is up to the doctor and the individual case.

President Donald Trump and Conservatives believe that the issue is a state's issue, and they also believe in exceptions - rape, incest and the case where the life of the mother is in danger.

Conservatives accepted the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v Wade rulling but believe that any abortions should not be paid for with taxpayer dollars.  However, in 2022, conservatives again supported the decision by the United States Supreme Court when they ruled in the Dobbs Case that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion, and each state would need to decide the issue.

When it comes to choice, the woman has made a choice to have unprotected sex and that choice should be a serious one.  If a women gets pregnant and she does not want the child, there are other options, including adoption.  There are approximately one million couples waiting to adopt a child.  They should consider bringing happiness and joy to those that cannot have their own children.

The key difference is that Conservatives do not believe Government should pay for abortions or force companies carry insurance policies that cover abortions.
