Handling Disasters


Issue Summary
No President in modern history has had to face a pandemic as COVID19, so it is difficult to objectively judge the response. However, we can provide an objective response to the collection of disasters faced by both parties, over the past 2 administrations.

Liberal Position

Flood Response

When Louisiana was hit with disastrous floods in August, 2016, it was described as the worst natural disaster since Sandy. At least 13 people died, while another 85,000 registered for disaster aid.

“This disaster is the worst to hit the United States since Superstorm Sandy, and we anticipate it will cost at least $30 million…”

Barack Obama vacationed in Martha’s Vineyard and held a fundraiser while the floods went on. Barack attended a $33,000 a plate dinner, squeezed in between a number of 18 hole strolls. FLOTUS Michelle was somewhere in New Jersey.

Pandemic - COVID19

Joe Bided did not make any constructive comments on the handling of the Pandemic, and when he did come out, he listed off the things that Trump had already done.  He did not even consider working with the Pharmaceutical companies to secure the vacines. Biden has said he would require all Americans to wear masks, even in areas where there are few cases, and he would shut down the country again if the science recommended it.

Conservative Position

Hurricane response

For Hurricane Harvey, Trump spent several days planning for the appropriate response and set records in getting supplies and materials to the effected areas. All of the Hurricane disasters under President Trump were handled better than any other President in recent history.

Pandemic - COVID19

President Trumps advisors all advised against him shutting down travel from China in January 2020, and he was chastised by the Democrats and the media as being a racist,  but in the end, that move saved over 100,000 lives.  

Since no president ever had to deal with anything like this. Trump organized a task force of medical experts that made recommendations.  

Trump provided two huge hospital ships - one was sent to New York City and the other to Los Angeles.  The one in New York was not used and as a result Governor Cuomo shipped the Coronavirus patients to Nursing homes which resulted in 14,000 deaths.  We are not sure why Cuomo did not use this hospital ship that would have saved lives.

Trump acted as a true leader and was able to secure the PPE needed by the hospitals and providers, and recently made agreements with pharmaceutical companies to secure hundreds of millions of doses of the vacines when they become available.  This action is not something that any other politician suggested before he did it.  

Trump seems to be wrestling with the balance between opening up the economy and controlling the spread of the virus.  Shutting down the economy, as suggested by the Democrats, has had a dramatic impact on the livelihood of many, many Americans, and Trump is trying to get it going again.  Over the past 2 months the economy has added back more jobs then ever before, so it seems to be working.
