Guns and the 2nd Amendment


Issue Summary
The Democrats and the Republicans have two very different perspectives on the 2nd Amendment. The Republicans believe strongly in the Constitution and the rights it provides to the individuals, while the Democrats feel that guns are too dangerous in today's world and should be removed from the citizens. The 2nd Amendment is the second most important amendment to the Constitution, which is why it is second, right behind freedom of speech, religion and the pursuit of happiness. This is not just a coincidence. Francis Marion was a leader of a militia - a group of gun owning homeowners - the fought along side George Washington's army against the British. Francis Marion is said to be the father of Guerilla warfare. Without these militia fighting along side the army, the United States would never have been able to defeat the British. That is why it is so important for the 2nd amendment to be in a right in the constitution. It is not to shoot animals. It is to protect and defend this country from any enemy. For 250 years we have never been attacked on our soil because there are over 300 million weapons in the hands of the citizens that can step up and destroy anyone that tries to take us over. Such an important amendment.

Liberal Position

Liberals believe that Guns kill innocent people and should be abolished as well as the 2nd amendment.  State by state they are successfully passing laws making it more and more difficult for honest hardworking people to buy and own guns.  With the rise in violence and the Democrats push to defund and dismantle the police, how will innocent victims respond to criminals?  

Joe Biden has said he would appoint Beto O'Rourke as a key cabinet person, responsible for dealing the Guns.  Beto is on record saying he is coming for everyone's guns.  

Removing guns from law abiding citizens and defunding the police is the plan for the Democrats for this election, even thought over 70% of the people want more police.

Conservative Position

Conservatives believe that the 2nd amendment is here to stay.  It is the cornerstone of the constitution.  Once that right has been taken, there is no stopping the removal of the rights guaranteed in the 1st amendment.  Conservatives believe that any able bodied mentally stable person has the right to own a fire arm.  Many people have been saved by simply brandishing a weapon in the face of a criminal.  

Conservatives believe that there are already plenty of laws on the books to stop criminals from getting guns, but the problem is that these laws need to enforced, and a more severe punishments need to bestowed upon those that violate those laws.

Liberals do not understand the significance of the 2nd amendment, why we have it, why it is second and why it is so important.  In summary, the Revolutionary war was won because George Washington's army fought along side the men of the Militia (a band of gun owning home owners not part of the army).  Without these militia we would have lost the war and still be under the rule of the queen.  That is the "Why" it is in the constitution.  It is second because the most important rights are in the 1st amendment (e.g., speech, religion, etc.) and without the 2nd amendment to protect those freedoms, those freedoms would be lost.  In the 245+ years of our existence, no country has attacked us with an invasion because they know there are over 300 million civilians that are armed and can defend this country.

Conservatives believe that guns do not kill people but people kill people.  If you take away the guns from honest hard working people, then only the criminals will have guns, which is recipe for higher crime rates.
